My Favorite Productivity (& Sanity)Tools

By Diane

Let’s face it: Nobody has time to write a book.

I know very few people who have a lot of time on their hands these days. (We’re all too busy trying to keep up with the latest technology. Some of us out of necessity–such as what I’m dealing with concerning computer issues that have dogged me for months. Some because they like it.)

As tax time rolls around and I do the natural evaluating of my business, I’ve been  thinking about how to squeeze more productive results out of every day.

So this week I thought I’d share a few of the tools–most of them free or rather inexpensive–that have made a HUGE difference in my life and business. I don’t know what I’d do without them!

MUST-HAVE FREEBIE

First on my list is a tool called Evernote.  I don’t know what I”d do without this amazing and FREE piece of software. Basically, you can store ANYTHING in one file that you can search. You can even store pictures that you take from the Web on your phone. (I don’t use it for this, but those who use their phone for everything can apparently use Evernote with their phone.)

I just got an email with the PIN code to block my daughter from buying anything on her cell phone. (Ha ha!) I copied and pasted the numbers into Evernote. All I have to do is search “parental block” and I will get right to that information.

I copy and paste urls that would be useful to keep track of (these are live links within Evernote), important email correspondence, contact information–basically, my life!

So, Evernote is the tool you must have, in my opinion, to function in today’s world.

MUST-HAVE FREE (PRO VERSION INEXPENSIVE)

RoboForm: Learn more... The other tool I can’t live without is Roboform. There’s a free version with a limited number of passwords you can remember, but the Pro version is not expensive, and what it will do for your sanity….

Basically, Roboform allows you to store all your usernames and passwords to your computer. When you want to go to that site, you go to Roboform in your browser toolbar, find the name of the site you want to access, then it automatically (and safely, I might add) adds your username and password, and you’re in.

I probably have a couple of hundred accounts, at least, that I would go crazy keeping track of without Roboform Pro. Even with Evernote!

And if you’re the type of person who feels you don’t need Roboform because you have one username and password for everything–Do you know how unsafe that is? You need unique usernames or at least passwords for ALL your different accounts.

These two tools will save you time and preserve your sanity. Get them today!

Hi Diane,
I checked out the Evernote software. Sadly it is only for Windows OS. They are missing a huge market by not targeting Mac users! Wish they would branch out to more stable OS system (I love my Apple!).

Thanks for letting us know about these tools. Great for non-Mac users.

Thank you so much, i will have to try that out (because i also have about a hundred sites i get on daily)!

My own tip for saving time is (now this is if you live with other people) set time aside where no one is allowed to bother you. I used to have such a hard time (being a college sutdent still living at home) with writing, because every time i would sit down to get started, someone, mainly my mother, would interrupt me.

Finally i’d had enough. So one day i wrote a note on my door saying, “Do not disturb until (insert time here). Thank you.”. And, to my surprise, it worked. My mother didin’t bother me, and even stopped others from doing the same (i do have an awesome mom).

I’ve notice i can get a lot more writing done now, and my writing even seems to turn out better the first time around, where normally i would have to read over it a few times and make changes.

Being in the middle of self-publishing my first novel, i need all the time i can get, and this was a huge help!

Thanks so much for all your advice, by the way. I’ve only been reading some of your blogs and articles for a week or so, but already i’ve noticed my writing become easier and even better! Lets hope my story is as good as i think it is, yeah? ;)
