Publishing Veteran Discusses Trends, How to Get Started Writing, and More
Posted by: | CommentsIn my last post, I discussed a possible new direction in publishing in the wake of some recent events. I wanted to ask a veteran publishing professional what he thinks of what’s happened, because he’s been involved in a rather unique publishing program.Â
I was all set to do a regular teleseminar for you, but:
a. my guest could not do it any evening this week and
b. some of the material is time-sensitive
SO …
I recorded the interview and you can listen to it by clicking below.
My teleseminar guest is Rick Frishman, who has been in publishing even
longer than I have, and is an author (of course) who’s actually been on Oprah. He’s
the founder of Planned Television Arts, and now publisher of a company that I’ve been observing with great interest for several years now, Morgan James Publishing.
Rick is the author of a brand-new book, Where’s Your Wow? 16 Ways to Make Your
Competitors Wish They Were You. You can catch the interview I had with him about that book on my podcast.
We talked about how Morgan James Publishing is modeling a new approach for nonfiction authors, and how the whole publishing industry may be following suit. Also about a way you can learn how to make your book a bestseller from the master of book marketing, Mark Victor Hansen, who has sold millions of Chicken Soup for the Soul books.
He’ll be revealing his secrets, along with others who will be at the Author 101 seminar at the end of May.
Please catch the audio of this interview now, and check out the links mentioned in
the interview (which I’ve conveniently posted below the audio). Rick has some invaluable goodies for you.
As you’ll hear in this interview, Rick Frishman has a passion for assisting authors
in getting their message out–a passion I share. Please listen and learn!

Big Changes in the Publishing World? (And Are They Good for Authors?)
Posted by: | CommentsPublishing is on the brink of many big, big changes, I believe. The system has been broken for a long time, but all the cracks are now showing. Will the whole system as we know it crumble and give way to something new?
I think so. It’s already happening. It’s just a matter of time.
For instance, a month or so ago, something significant happened. One the major players in publishing, Robert S. Miller, left Hyperion (which he founded and headed) and moved to HarperCollins, where he will head a new imprint. This new division has an entirely different structure–designed to resolve two of the publishing industry’s major concerns: high author advances (to certain authors, anyway), and the high rate of returned books (which I’ve said elsewhere is one of the fatal flaws in publishing).
This new imprint (which is industry speak for a division within a publishing company, sort of a mini-publisher within the larger publishing house) plans to pay Read More→
Two Must-Read Seth Godin Books Reviewed: The Dip, Meatball Sundae
Posted by: | CommentsOn my Books ‘n’ Such book review Internet radio show, I try to focus on books that have potential to change your life in some way, personally or professionally.
This week, I review two of Seth Godin’s books, The Dip and Meatball Sundae.
Each of these books is having a continuing impact on me in many ways.
The Dip is subtitled, The Little Book that Teaches You When to Quit (And When to Stick). On the show, I talk about how Seth’s thoughts color my professional life, and my parenting as well. In a world in which there are way too many choices and distractions, this book gets you to ask and answer the questions that can bring clarity and focus.
Meatball Sundae is a must-read for anyone who wants to use the Internet professionally–to sell your books, promote your business or even a cause. Nobody has a better bead on the culture of the Internet than Seth Godin (and make no mistake, it is a culture of its own).
Seth not only understands and clearly articulates what is, but he sees what can be, where things are likely to go. In this book he outlines 14 trends that “are completely remaking what it means to be a marketer.”
Maybe you don’t think of yourself as a marketer. You’re an author, or would-be author. Read More→
Email May Not Be Getting to You, So Please Do This
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s been frustrating: I’ve discovered that email just isn’t getting through to those who say they want to hear from me–people like you!
I have been dealing with Yahoo/ATT (my email provider), as well as my web hosting company. It’s a case of big businesses giving me the runaround.
(This can go on for only so long, if I’m to believe what Seth Godin says in his books, especially Meatball Sundae. Businesses will not last if they don’t serve the customer.)
At any rate, I’m taking steps to correct this matter. If you want to continue to receive information from me, please take a moment to re-sign up. You can do it right here, by signing up in the upper right-hand corner. You will receive an email from me asking you to confirm your subscription. Please click the link in that email and add me to your address book right away.
That should do it. I have lots of good stuff I want to share with you, but we have to be able to communicate, right?
Thanks so much. One of the most wonderful things about life nowadays is the ability to connect with people we never would have connected with even 10 years ago. I value you so very much. If what I have to give is of value to you, please stay connected.
(And if not, this is a good time to part. I hope we part friends.)
MotherStyles Goes International
Posted by: | CommentsJust couldn’t resist mentioning something that’s pretty exciting to me and Janet Penley, with whom I wrote MotherStyles: Using Personality Type to Discover Your Parenting Stregths.
Two psychologists from Hong Kong have reviewed MotherStyles on Metapsychology Online Reviews. MotherStyles is to be published in both Chinese and Korean!
Interested in knowing more about MotherStyles? Check out Janet’s blog.
This podcast will enlighten any parent or educator who cares about the self-esteem of children and wants to see them learn as fully as possible.
On my Books ‘n’ Such podcast on the ReviewYak channel, I interviewed Dr. Kathy Koch, the Founder and President of Celebrate Kids, Inc., in Fort Worth, TX.
In this lively interview, we discussed her book, How am I Smart? A Parent’s Guide to Multiple Intelligences. You’ll find out how to identify these in your children (and perhaps yourself as well), how to deal with behavioral issues in light of these 8 “smarts,” how to use them to help your child succeed in school and find direction in life … and a lot more.
Amazon Says Print on Demand Publishers Must Use BookSurge if They Want to Sell on Amazon
Posted by: | CommentsIf you publish with a print-on-demand publisher (who more than likely is using Lightning Source to print the books), things are about to change–and that could end up costing you more to self-publish.
Amazon is telling publishers that if they want to sell their books on amazon.com, they will have to use their print-on-demand printer, BookSurge.
It smacks of strong-arm tactics to get people to use their services, though Amazon cites increased efficiency as the reason: “By using machines that are located in its own fulfillment centers, Amazon can have a title ready for shipment quicker than if it needs to wait for a book to be shipped to its facility. The extra time will permit Amazon to ‘marry’ a title with another product that will be shipped in the same box, in most cases hitting Amazon Prime shipping times,” Publisher’s Weekly reports.
Amazon states that if publishers do not want to use BookSurge for print-on-demand (pod), they can still sell their titles through Amazon’s Advantage Program, “provided they pre-produce five copies of each title that Amazon will stock in its warehouse.” Publishers can also use Amazon’s third party marketplace option to list titles. Amazon is not requiring that pod titles be printed exclusively through BookSurge (though their links won’t work on the Amazon site if they don’t).
So what does this mean for anyone who is self-publishing? As Mark Levine, founder of Mill City Press, says on his website, it’s not that big a deal. It’s mostly a pain for the self-publishers, who will have to keep accounts at both BookSurge and Lightning Source. Yes, they may have to pass those costs on to the author, but that’s the way it may be.
As Levine notes, however, “Officially, nothing but threats from Amazon have actually happened. … Message boards are filled with calls for protest and revolution. That may cause a backlash against Amazon that makes it reconsider its publishing-Gestapo approach.”
We’ll see, I guess. Stay tuned. And weigh in on this–feel free to comment!

So tune in next Wednesday for “How To Build A Powerful Platform
