The Big Problem with “Real” Bookstore Signings

Friday, May 30th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I just viewed a video in which Alex Mandossian talks about the big problem with in-store book signings.

He hits the nail on the head!

(If you want access to this video and his other trainings, plus a custom author marketing analysis, sign up here .)

A friend of mine once nearly had a nervous breakdown toward the end of an exhausting, two-month author tour to promote her novels. (I never had the heart to ask how many books she sold. I suspect it was at least as much as she could have sold on a Virtual Book Tour.)

компютри втора употребаContrast this to the experience of the coauthors of Pagan Christianity: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices , for whom I conducted a Virtual Book Tour . They received 668 questions and signups before the VBT on March 18, and we conducted the book tour from the comfort of our own homes, in 60 minutes.

Hundreds of people attended the phone interview, and people bought the book from all over the world.

Not only that–but in the 2 months since, 59 more people have asked questions. One of the huge advantages of a VBT over a bookstore signing is that you get to begin a relationship with your readers that lasts, because when they sign up for the VBT they give their email addresses.

People can continue to ask questions of the author, and then they listen to the replay of the Virtual Book Tour.

This means you can begin and continue a relationship with readers–something that thrills readers. They not only get to ask the author a question and hear the author explain the book–no matter where they live or the author lives–but they now get to continue to hear from that author. (Assuming the author continues the relationship, of course.)

None was this was ever possible in what I call “the old era” of publishing. In the ‘old era,” which is passing away, a reader bought a book, and had almost no way to connect with the author, or vice versa.

Yes, we’re in a new era of publishing, all right, and Alex Mandossian, with Virtual Book Tours, has a big hand in ushering in that new era. If you haven’t signed up for the Virtual Book Tours Systems Preview Call, where you’ll hear all about how VBTs work, please sign up now . It’s the future of book promotion, especially as gas prices soar and bookstores close. The call will give you the leading edge to prosper in this exciting new era of publishing.

Resource Roundup for Authors Replay is Ready

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

“If you were to write a book, how would you rank the most important things to spend time and money on?”

“Is a blog really important…if so, why?”

“How do you keep yourself motivated through the time consuming process of writing a book or ebook.”

“How important is a web page/site to sell books?”

“How do you go about setting up a website or blog? Do I need someone else to do it for me?”

These are just some of the questions I (along with Terry Whalin and Cathy Perkins) answered on last night’s call.

I went through a progression of what you would need, step by step, to go from getting focused and productive, to starting your book, to what you would do to put together a book proposal, to setting up a website and/or blog, to using tools to build your list and sell stuff.

All that in less than 90 minutes!

And you get a Resource Guide that you can use to take notes, and also have all the links handy for when you need them.

Take 80 minutes to listen to the replay. Make sure you get the Resource Guide and take notes! Then, take action on what you need most.

The resources are all here. Find out the shortcuts to getting focused, getting started, getting published by a traditional publisher, and getting your website up easily and cheaply!

It’s all here .

Resource Roundup for Authors–You’re Invited (Ask Your Question)

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

It’s been awhile since I’ve conducted a teleseminar, and I’m itching to do one.

People have been asking me many questions, on a wide range of topics.

However, most of them fell under the topics of …

  • how do I get started?
  • how do I manage the technical stuff, like creating a website and setting up to sell on the Web?
  • how do I best get published? (including, how do I get a publisher to notice me and/or decide which self-publisher won’t rip me off?)
  • how do I market/promote/develop a following?

I’ve got great news! (more…)

Virtual Book Tours–Why are They So Effective in Selling Books?

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

I couldn’t wait to share this exclusive interview I did with Alex Mandossian–especially because something I said in our discussion gave him the chills! (Don’t worry, it’s completely G-rated.)

This interview was originally aired on my Books ‘n’ Such book review show. Listen and learn:

  • what sparked the idea for this new way of selling books that is revolutionizing book publishing
  • why Virtual Book Tours are “green” (and “evergreen”)
  • exactly how a VBT works
  • how VBTs compare to in-store book signings
  • how successful authors really make their money
  • Do VBTs only work for well-known authors?
  • how you can use Virtual Book Tour Systems to become an expert even if you yourself have not written a book
  • why not-so-famous authors often sell more books on a VBT than famous authors
  • how you can “tour the world” through a VBT
  • how a VBT can enable you to write your next book–almost effortlessly!
  • the missing ingredient in the “old era of publishing” that VBTs now add–and how it is making all the difference
  • how to get your book idea out of you
  • the secret ingredient that sells books
  • why the traditional publishing model is dead–and what’s replacing it
  • why do people buy more books from Alex’s blog than they do from Amazon?
  • the number one complaint of authors–and how to overcome it
  • what you’ll learn from the VBT Preview call
  • how Alex sold 3500 books for one author alone (more than many authors sell of their own book!)
  • Alex’s most memorable book tours
  • how VBTs can lead to further media coverage (how would you like to be mentioned on The Today Show?)
  • Will Oprah pick up on Virtual Book Tours (what one author who has an “in” with her is doing)
  • how to attract big-name experts to interview, even if you’re a “nobody”
  • the one thought that will get you going in the right direction–enthusiastically

And finally–what I said that gave Alex Mandossian chills!

Enjoy! Simply click to listen, or download and listen on your portable media player. But do it soon, okay?

Do Virtual Book Tours Work for Fiction Authors?

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Tinisha sent me an email with a question that might be on a lot of people’s minds, so I thought I’d answer it here.

Tinisha asks: It seems like the Virtual Book Tour System is only for non-fiction books. All the authors listed that Alex has helped have written non-fiction books. I’m trying to promote my fiction novel. Do you think this tele-conference would still be helpful to me?

MY ANSWER: Alex isn’t sure it works for fiction, but I have some ideas of my own on this. I once wrote a book called “Behind the Stories,” and I think this whole “behind the stories” approach for a VBT can work with fiction authors. So, I will be talking to him about this.

On my podcast, Books ‘n’ Such, I interview some fiction authors. See what you think at www.reviewyak.com. I don’t see why something like this couldn’t be a VBT, with people asking the author questions ahead of time. Caveat–you do need to have something of an audience first, I think. But there are ways to do that, and then the VBT would build on that.

My suggestion is to sign up for the Preview Call. You will get a great overview of how Virtual Book Tours work. Then stay tuned. If I make headway, with Alex or on my own, concerning VBTs and fiction, I’ll be talking about in via emails, my site, this blog, etc.

In fact, stay tuned for upcoming posts with interviews with novelists on this “behind the stories” idea. You can be the judge! (If you already know you’d enjoy this kind of interview, comment below and also, tell me which authors you’d like me to interview.)
