A True Story and an Opportunity Prime for Authors

Friday, March 28th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’d like to tell you a true story that has a lot to do with how you think of yourself as an author or potential author.

Did you know the of game Monopoly was created by an unemployed heating engineer named Charles Darrow … and that his first version of the game was developed in 1935?

It’s true….

But here’s what happened: The toy company rejected Darrow’s idea because they said it had 52 fundamental flaws and would never
become a big seller.

That’s true too….

Today, Monopoly is so successful that Parker Brothers (the toy company who had the vision to see the potential in Darrow’s idea), prints more than $40 billion of Monopoly money each year … which twice the
amount of real money printed by the U.S. mint!

Why I’m Telling You This Story

I’m telling you this story because I want you to take advantage of (more…)

Why Would Authors Want to Podcast?

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

First, there’s a new article on my site that I’d like you to read.

As you may or may not know, I’ve started a new book review podcast at http://www.reviewyak.com.

I interview authors for a show called “Books ‘N’ Such.” (Because I may review other information products, I decided to add the ‘n’ Such part.)

(If you have a book you would like me to consider for the show, reply to this and let me know more about your book.)

A lot of people don’t know what podcasting is, let alone why an author might want to consider it.

So I wrote an article that will help you understand why you might want to learn more about it.

In the article I point out some unique advantages to podcasting, and give five good reasons to consider it.

Read all about it here.

As usual, I suggest an Action Step. That’s why I am “Your Book Publishing Coach,” you know!

The 25-50-25 Formula for Overcoming Information Overload

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

“Information overload can reduce a person’s ability to focus as much as losing a night’s sleep.”Glenn Wilson

Everything I do, on this blog, in my articles, teleseminars and information products, are all geared toward helping you to make sense out of the often-confusing world of publishing.

I’m aware that it can sometimes feel overwhelming, what with all the information on publishing there is to know.

Today I read an excellent article by Bob Bly in the Early to Rise newsletter, and I thought I’d pass part of it on to you.

Bly provides a simple guideline for getting unstuck from the information overload trap in what he calls the “25-50-25 Formula for Success.”

He writes:

The rule says there are only three ways to learn a process (e.g., how to start an Internet business) or a skill (e.g., copywriting): studying, observing, and doing. The 25-50-25 rule says that (more…)

This Week’s Podcast: Healing from an Abused Past

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

My guest on this week’s Books ‘n’ Such podcast is Jim Cyr, author of the moving book, The Cracked Pot: Finding Grace in the Cracks of Childhood Abuse.

This podcast is for anyone who has experienced a past marked by abuse, or knows someone who has.

Listen to the incredible story of Jim’s background of not only sexual but ritual Satanic abuse, as well as suffering from five congenital birth defects that required many painful and humiliating surgeries, from his childhood through his teen years. But as Jim Cyr’s story courageously reveals, the wounds of childhood not only heal, they can lead to the loving grace of wisdom, and a heartfelt desire to help others achieve wholeness, too.

In this interview Jim shares how he has found hope, healing and grace, and how anyone else willing to walk the journey of healing can do so as well. Jim is now a storyteller and minister who brings healing to others. Check out more about his book at www.acrackedpot.com and his storytelling at www.hearttales.net.

What a Virtual Book Tour Can Do for an Author

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

This past Tuesday I conducted a Virtual Book Tour for the book, Pagan Christianity? Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices, by Frank Viola and George Barna.

As a result, within 10 days, the authors had:

  • added to their list hundreds of new names
  • received more than 600 questions that told them what people are most curious to know
  • created “buzz” about their book among hundreds of people
  • sold a lot of books (how many, I cannot disclose)
  • created a marketing tool that continues to work for them 24/7 (people can continue to ask questions at their Ask page, listen to the replay and pass the news on to their friends)
  • added a sample interview that would show the media what they can do

Not bad for a couple of hours of work (for them, that is, not me!:-))

If you would like to find out more about how Ask-type Virtual Book Tours work, check this out.

Build and Leverage Your Author Platform (for Beginners)

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1pm Eastern, 10am Pacific, Annie Jennings of Annie JenningsPR will be doing a no-cost teleseminar just for BEGINNERS.

You’ve probably heard that to get on television or radio, you need to already have been on radio or television. Media won’t book you unless they can see you’ve already been booked before.

It’s a Catch-22 that leaves most authors wondering how on earth to start.

That’s what Annie will address in this teleseminar. There ARE ways to create a good media bio, and Annie will show you exactly how.

So tune in next Wednesday for “How To Build A Powerful Platform
& Leverage Your Platform Into Lots Of Business (and Lots Of Bucks)!”

When you sign up, you’ll also receive her brand-new CD: “The Making Of A Million Dollar Expert”

New Book Review Podcast Up!

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I have a new podcast, and I invite you to listen!

It’s on a podcasting network called Yaktivate. I’m the channel anchor for the Review Yak channel. My show is called Books ‘n’ Such, and I’ll be interviewing authors and talking about books and information products that will enhance your life and/or business.

I’ll be reporting here from time to time, too, on how this podcast is making a difference in my own marketing, and how you can use podcasting as an author to drive more traffic to your site and gain exposure to your business.

For now, I invite you to listen to this first Books ‘n’ Such podcast, in which I interview Charlene Ann Baumbich, the delightful author of the popular Dearest Dorothy series.

Where to Ask Your Book Marketing Questions

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

One of the results of my survey is that 71.9 percent of you said you wanted information on publicity/promotion, 56.3 percent want to know how to market, 59.4 want to know how to market on the Internet, and 62.5 percent want to know how to make money from your book.

(Feel free to take the survey if you haven’t yet.)

Next Wednesday, March 5, Terry Whalin will be interviewing Sally Stuart, author of The Christian Writers Market Guide, and you can ask Sally Stuart your question ahead of time. Especially if the Christian market is your niche, you won’t want to miss this interview! (I’m sure there will be a replay available, which you’ll find out about if you sign up.)

When you sign up, you’ll also get a free chapter on marketing from Sally’s book, Getting Publshed (which is no longer in print). It focuses mainly on offline marketing, but that’s very important, of course.
